MATERIAL TESTING
Membranes and other components of the modules are steadily characterized in our lab.
The measurements are performed on original materials from customer and
can be combined with accelerated ageing or anther treatment.
You can send us material samples for analysis and shortly after get a confidential test-report.

Listed below are characteristics measured using established methods.
For testing other parameters, developing a specific measurement procedure, leasing
or purchasing the test equipment please send a request.
Ion-Exchange Membranes
• Area resistance; conductivity (through plane)
• Permselectivity to counter-ions
• Impedance and current-voltage curves of bipolar membranes
• Electrochemical characteristics of a membrane or a
Membrane-Electrode Assembly at different temparatures and humidities
• Water uptake
• Ion-Exchange Capacity
• Expansion (by swelling, transfer of ionic form, or change of con-
centration and temperature)
also applicable to other dense membranes:
• Water permeability (pressure gradient)
• Diffusion permeability (concentration gradient)

also applicable to other flat sheet materials, incl. porous membranes and non-permeable films:
• Thickness
• Mullen Burst Test
• Stress-strain test (wet, or dry)

Dense membranes and gaskets
• Gas parmermeability (pressure gradient). Examples:
- Hydrogen permeability of flat-sheet gasket material at different temperatures and hymidities to
evaluate suitability for sealing
- Air permeability of dense membranes (integrity test)
Ion-Exchange Resins
• Electrical conductivity of ion-exchange resin bed at different compressions
• Ion-Exchange Capacity
• Selectivity
• Density of powdered ion-exchange resins

Spacers
• Mass transfer coefficient in a spacer filled channel
• Pressure lost in a spacer-filled channel
• Void fraction of a spacer net

Integrated spacers for measuring mass transfer

General characterization of plastics and other materials
• Total Organic Carbon (TOC) analysis in liquid and solid samples
(e.g. water after membrane extraction test)
• Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM)
coupled with Energy Dispersive X-Ray Analysis (EDX)
for detection of metals on the surface
• Light- and UV-microscope
• Termogravimetric analysis (TGA) coupled with
Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR)
to characterize a material's thermal stability
• Water analysis - conductivity, pH, hardness, TOC, IC.
