MASTER THESIS:
MEMBRANE FOR DESALINATION

Motivation:

In an innovative Project we investigate feasibility of synthesizing electrochemically formic acid from carbon dioxide. The global target here is to decrease the carbon dioxide release into the atmosphere using electrical energy from renewable sources. The generated in the actual electrolysis formic acid is contaminated with salt and must be purified in the subsequent electrodialysis process. In an experimental study the suitable for electrodialysis ion-exchange membranes must be selected and the process parameters for desalination must be found.

Tasks:

  • Research on available membranes for desalination of formic acid

  • Experimental development of methods for membrane characterization

  • Measurement of key parameters on the membranes available commercially and newly developed ones

  • Extension of the test-bench

  • Experimental investigations of electrodialysis desalination process with selected membranes

  • Planning; regular discussions and presentations


Requirements:

  • Matriculation in Process Engineering, Chemistry or similar

  • Knowledge of membrane processes, electrochemistry, measurement & control, or polymer chemistry are of advantage

  • Motivation for hands-on and experimental work
